SEA PROFICIENCY AWARD

The purpose of this test is to ensure that the candidate has sufficient knowledge and skill to enable him to take his (I assume this also reads HER, or are ladies precluded from being sea canoeists) kayak to sea under a competent leader.

The test must be taken at sea, under moderate conditions. Allowance will be made by the examiners if conditions are rough, but the kayak skills must be perfected in a competent manner. For reasons of safety three kayaks will participate. The test will not be taken in a flat calm.

THE CANDIDATE WILL:-
1. Present himself suitably equipped for the test.

2. Present for inspection the following items, which must be both suitable and serviceable;
    a. Kayak, paddle and spraycover
    b. Bow and stern toggles and/or safety lines and/or painters;
    c. Buoyancy;
    d. Life jacket;
    e. Repair kit and simple first aid kit;
    f. Rudder and steering gear if fitted; (it is recommended that the kayak be fitted with rudder and steering gear).
    g. Waterproof container/s;
    h. Sponge

3. Pack his waterproof container/s with necessary items for a one day tour and stow it (them) in the kayak.
In addition to those items listed above, the following should be included; (1) spare clothing; (2) packet lunch; (3) equipment for providing a hot drink; (4) emergency food; (5) flares; (6) whistle; (7) torch; (8) matches (or lighter); (9) polythene bag of minimum size 2 metres by 1 metre for use in exposure cases; (10) emergency space blanket; (11) fluorescing dye, or approved marker; (12) fresh water; (13) compass.
It is important to note that items may be added or altered to suit local conditions.

    b. Efficient paddling technique, forwards and backwards;
    c. Turning the kayak 360 degrees in both directions by using sweep strokes. If the kayak is fitted with a rudder, he will, whilst paddling evenly on both sides, turn his kayak again in both directions, this time steering with the rudder only;

    b. Bringing the kayak into a beach forwards, sideways, and backwards (If the kayak is fitted with a rudder, the candidate will not be required to bring the kayak to the beach backwards).

6. Perform capsize drill, followed by a deep water rescue with his partners. He will take charge of a rescue and then act as a capsized patient.

7. Prove that he can swim. He will then swim 100 metres in canoeing clothing (shirt, shorts, sandshoes, and buoyancy aid), swim under a canoe and then surface on the other side.
