The
Albatross Sea Kayak Club (Tasmania) 2001
Membership is by invitation only.
Membership requirements are that members must have landed on Albatross
Island (Western Bass Strait) by sea kayak before joining.
This is the third sea kayak club I have started up.
The first was the Tasmanian Sea Canoeing Club, but this ended up full of people who did not want to go paddling on the open sea, which is basically how the President of the NSW Sea Kayak Club defines a sea kayaker (see Quotes). And in fact the past President of the TSCC admitted that it is more a community club than a sea kayaking club.
The next was the Maatsuyker Canoe Club, which was intended for people that wanted to do some adventurous canoeing on a regular basis. It now appears to me to be filling up with people who do not meet my vision of "Adventurous", or regular. And in fact by the number of paddlers that have landed on Maatsuyker Island, it is obviously becoming a popular destination.
But Albatross Island is still a challenge to get to, and land on, and can be a challenge to get off it as well. Hence the ALBATROSS SEA KAYAK CLUB. I envisage a three to four day trip around the coastline of Tasmania somewhere every couple of months - which means members will have to save up a couple of rostered days off - unless they are happily retired as some of us are. I do not envision this to mean we are going to paddle 100km every day, or any day for that matter. It is more a case of a group of people with similar interests paddling in an area that interests them - for enjoyment.(See latest trips) (or future trips)
