Maatsuyker Island

Numerous trips have been made to Maatsuyker Island. Maatsuyker Island is about 16km off the rugged south coast (see map), and I feel that trips to areas like this are what sea canoeing is all about. Two visits were made in1979, the second group arriving 2 hours after the first group had departed. We returned again in 1986. In 1993/94 (due to atrocious weather, and time constraints) we aborted a visit, but two members made a successful visit in February the same year. In January 1997 we stayed overnight on the island on our way to Port Davey.

For an early view of Maatsuyker Island, see the watercolour by George Raper, a midshipman on the HMS Sirius in the First Fleet, done as he passed Southern Tasmania in January 1788. The painting was done just south of the Mewstone.
