From 'The Sea Canoeist', Vol 2. 1979.
WEST COAST – JAN. 1981

I hereby give prior notice of this trip to give interested paddlers time to arrange holidays and travel, build a kayak if necessary, and probably get a bit of training and experience if necessary.
The trip was done in Jan 1978 by Dick Holmes, Ross Mansfield, Tony Gaiswinkler, Bruce Davies and myself to have a good look at the area for its suitability for future trips. It is unquestionably one of the most beautiful areas we have been in, and the campsites are A1. The original trip was from Strahan to Hobart, about 633 Km, and took 19 days in near perfect conditions.

This next trip will follow the same route but about 4 to 5 weeks will be allowed, to cover bad weather, and give more time for bushwalking etc. All you need is a sea touring kayak of some description, and some sea canoeing experience. It will not be necessary to be able to roll, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt if you can. We intend only paddling on reasonable days, probably covering 15 to 20 nautical miles a day. All supplies will be carried from the start, and we do not anticipate any food drops, although this could be arranged for Port Davey without any problems. If you like sea food then you are in for a feast.

TAKE NOTE; This will not be one of my usual long distance hair raising trips; it is to cater for the ordinary reasonably competent paddler.

A condensed version of the 1979 trip report will be published in THE SEA CANOEIST No. 3.

Further inquiries to me.    LAURIE FORD
